Short answer

If you need to get out of the sun between Surin and Bang Tao, look for an indoor room with air conditioning rather than a shaded terrace — the difference is enormous once the temperature is in the thirties. Nima Cafe is one of those rooms: air-conditioned seating on Srisoonthon Road in Cherngtalay, about 1 km from Surin Beach and 2 km from Bang Tao Beach, Boat Avenue and Laguna Phuket, with cold drinks from 25 ฿, food all day, free Wi-Fi and free street parking at the door. Open 10:00 – 19:00, closed every Thursday.

When does the heat actually become a problem?

Phuket is hot all year, but the part of the day that defeats people is narrow and predictable: roughly 11:00 to 16:00, with the worst of it in the two hours after noon. It is not only the temperature. The humidity means your sweat stops working, the sea breeze dies down inland, and the glare off sand and concrete adds a few degrees that no thermometer records.

So a day on this coast works best split in two: beach early, beach again late, something indoors in between. Locals have always done it; visitors tend to learn it on day three, the hard way.

Why does indoor air conditioning beat a shaded terrace?

A fan moves hot air. Shade removes the sun but not the humidity. Air conditioning removes both heat and moisture, and that second part is why ten minutes in a cooled room resets you while an hour under an umbrella does not.

So when you are scanning for somewhere to stop, the question is not "is there shade?" but "is there a room?" Plenty of beautiful places along Bang Tao and Surin are open-air by design, which is lovely at nine in the morning and unusable at two in the afternoon. The cafés set back from the beach, in the lanes off Srisoonthon Road, are more often properly enclosed and cooled — they are built for people who live here rather than for the view.

What should you drink when you are already overheated?

Cold, wet and not too sweet, in that order. Sugar makes you thirstier an hour later; iced fruit and water do not. Everything below is from our own list, and in any café here you can ask for less sweet or less ice — it is a completely ordinary request.

How far is the nearest cool room from your beach?

Short version: nothing on this stretch of coast is far from anything. From our door on Srisoonthon Road:

That means the midday break does not have to cost you your day. You can leave the sand at noon, be sitting in cold air with a drink five minutes later, and be back for the good light at four.

What else is there to do indoors around here?

Narrower than in Patong or Phuket Town, honestly. Around Cherngtalay and Bang Tao the indoor options cluster at Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket — supermarkets, shops, cafés — plus the massage places along the main roads. For a one-hour gap in the worst of the heat, a café with a real kitchen is the simplest answer: cold air, a drink, lunch and Wi-Fi in one stop.

Hours, parking, Wi-Fi — the practical bits

Two things catch visitors out on this coast, and both are about time rather than temperature. First, many small places close early — ours is 19:00, which is later than several neighbours but still not a late-night spot. Second, small businesses here often take a fixed weekly day off rather than opening seven days; ours is Thursday. Check both before you ride anywhere.

The rest is simple. Parking is free on the street right outside, scooters at the entrance. There is free Wi-Fi and laptop-friendly indoor seating, so the hot hours double as your working hours. You do not need to book — walk in. Cards, PromptPay / Thai QR and cash all work. If you would rather not sit at all, call ahead and collect: coffee, a sandwich or something from the bakery counter for the villa.

How does Nima work as a place to cool down?

Plainly: we are a small halal café at 58/2 Srisoonthon Road, indoors and air-conditioned, with no view and no terrace to tempt you back into the sun. No pork and no alcohol anywhere, including the drinks list — and no CICOT certificate, which we say openly rather than calling ourselves certified.

The kitchen runs from opening to closing, so breakfast at three in the afternoon is not a negotiation. Light things work best in the heat: sandwiches and wraps 179–249 ฿, salads from 149 ฿, pastries from the bakery counter 39–229 ฿ — all available to take away as well. A drink plus something to eat lands around 250–400 ฿ per person. The full menu with photos is online if you want to decide before you arrive.

The trick to a hot day here is not endurance. It is knowing which room you are walking to at noon.

Questions & answers

Is Nima Cafe air-conditioned?

Yes. The seating is indoors with air conditioning, which is the whole point between about 11:00 and 16:00 on this coast. There is free Wi-Fi, table service and a toilet, and the kitchen runs from opening to closing, so you can sit out the hottest part of the day with a cold drink and eat at the same table. We are open 10:00–19:00 and closed every Thursday.

How far is Nima Cafe from Surin Beach?

About 1 km, which is roughly three minutes by car, taxi or Grab and a short scooter ride. Bang Tao Beach, Boat Avenue and Laguna Phuket are about 2 km away, around five minutes, and Kamala Beach is about 3 km. We are on Srisoonthon Road, the road that runs inland from Surin towards the Cherngtalay junction, with free street parking at the door.

What should I drink to cool down in the Phuket heat?

Something cold and not too sweet, and more of it than you think. Fresh fruit shakes are 99 ฿ — watermelon, pineapple, banana, apple, dragonfruit — and mango is 119 ฿; juices squeezed to order are 119 ฿. Iced americano is 99 ฿, iced latte 119 ฿, matcha latte 99 ฿. Still water is 25 ฿, and asking for less sugar or less ice is completely normal here.

Can I work on a laptop in an air-conditioned café here?

Yes, and the hot hours are the best hours to do it. We have free Wi-Fi, laptop-friendly indoor seating and air conditioning, and food all day rather than only at mealtimes, so a long afternoon at one table works. Ask at the counter and we will point you at a table near a power socket. The one thing to plan around is the closing time: we shut at 19:00.

Is Nima Cafe halal?

Everything we serve is halal: no pork and no alcohol anywhere on the menu, including the drinks. We do not hold a CICOT certificate, so we say that plainly rather than calling ourselves certified — the kitchen is halal, the paperwork is not something we claim. If you have a specific question about an ingredient, ask us at the counter or by phone and we will answer it straight.

When the sun wins, we are five minutes from the sand with the air conditioning on and something cold ready.
