Sandwiches and wraps near Bang Tao and Surin: the club, tuna, pesto chicken — which one to order

What's on the list?

Seven items, spread across toasted bread, ciabatta, croissant and tortilla. Here is the full lineup from the NIMA Cafe menu:

• NIMA Club Sandwich — 269 ฿. Triple-decker on toasted bread: grilled chicken, egg, cheddar, tomato, lettuce, mayo. Cut in four, served with fries.
• Tuna Sandwich — 269 ฿. Toasted bread, tuna, mayo, cucumber, greens.
• Chicken Sandwich with Pesto — 249 ฿. Ciabatta, grilled chicken, basil pesto, cheese, fresh vegetables.
• Chicken Wrap — 199 ฿. Grilled chicken, fresh vegetables and house sauce in a warm tortilla, served with fries.
• Egg, Chicken Ham & Cheese Croissant — 189 ฿. Butter croissant, soft omelette, halal chicken ham, melted cheddar.
• Chicken Ham & Cheese Toast — 189 ฿. Golden toast, halal chicken ham, melted cheese, served with fries and salad.
• Spinach Omelette Wrap with Garden Salad — 189 ฿. Green spinach omelette rolled with fresh herbs and vegetables, garden salad, honey-mustard dressing.

Fries can be added to anything that doesn't already come with them for +40 ฿. Extra fried egg is +20 ฿ if you want more protein on the side.

Which one if you're really hungry?

The club. Three layers, four pieces, a pile of fries — it is lunch for one very hungry person or a shared snack for two who also want something else. If you came off a long morning in the sea at Surin Beach, this is the order. It's filling in the way that a proper club sandwich should be: the egg and the cheddar do as much work as the chicken.

The Chicken Sandwich with Pesto at 249 ฿ is the ciabatta option — a bit lighter than the club, the pesto adds something the others don't have. Good if you want something substantial but not a three-layer stack.

Which one is the best value?

The Chicken Wrap at 199 ฿ comes with fries, eats with one hand, and doesn't make you sleepy for the afternoon. A good order if you are working from a café and need to get back to a laptop by two o'clock. The Chicken Ham & Cheese Toast at 189 ฿ is the other cheap full plate — fries and salad included, which is a lot of food for the price.

The croissant at 189 ฿ is the lightest of the three cheapest options. It's more of a late breakfast than a proper lunch, but if you walked in at 11:30 and just want something warm and quick, it works.

Something without chicken?

Two options, and they are quite different. The Tuna Sandwich is for fish eaters — toasted bread, tuna, mayo, cucumber, greens, 269 ฿. It's the only item on this part of the menu that has neither chicken nor egg as the main protein.

The Spinach Omelette Wrap is the one to order if you eat neither meat nor fish. Green spinach omelette, herbs, vegetables, garden salad, honey-mustard dressing — 189 ฿. Everything we serve is halal, including the chicken ham in the croissant and the toast.

What travels to the beach — and what doesn't?

Wraps travel best. Rolled tight, house sauce inside, nothing to go soggy for half an hour on a short scooter ride to Surin. The croissant is fine for a quick trip — it's small, it's wrapped, it holds together. The pesto ciabatta is somewhere in the middle.

The club is the worst traveller of the lot. Three layers of toast, steam building in the box, fries that go soft within fifteen minutes. Eat it here, at a table, with the air conditioning on. It's worth it.

What to drink with lunch

Something cold, almost always. An Iced Americano at 99 ฿ is the low-fuss choice — black, cold, done. The Iced Latte at 119 ฿ if you want milk. Fresh fruit shakes run 99 ฿ for most flavours (mango is 119 ฿) — the watermelon shake on a hot afternoon is hard to argue with. For something without caffeine: Honey Lemon soda 99 ฿ or the non-alcoholic Mojito at 119 ฿ — fresh lime, mint, soda and ice.

A sandwich and a cold drink is a typical lunch here. The kitchen is open until 19:00, so there's no rush to arrive at noon — a late lunch at half past two works just as well.

Is this a good spot for a working lunch?

Yes. Air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, table service, and a menu that doesn't require two hands and a bib. The chicken wrap or the ham and cheese toast are the easiest to eat while reading something. The club sandwich needs your full attention — four pieces, fries, a napkin. We are on Srisoonthon Road, about 2 km from Boat Avenue and the cafés around Laguna Phuket, so it's a short detour from the main strip.
