Vegetarian and plant-based options near Bang Tao, Surin and Laguna
Yes — seven dishes on our menu carry the vegetarian tag: oatmeal with berries 149 ฿, pancakes 149–169 ฿, spinach omelette wrap 189 ฿, Greek salad 199 ฿, avocado toast 219 ฿, shakshuka 249 ฿ and burrata salad 389 ฿, plus the plain three-egg omelette at 149 ฿ with vegetable, mushroom or cheese add-ons. Oat milk is +35 ฿ on any milk drink, the fresh juices have no sugar added, and the black coffees, teas, clear matcha and sodas are marked vegan. We are not a vegetarian kitchen, though — the honest list of what is not is further down.
Is there vegetarian food in Cherngtalay at all?
More than visitors expect, and less than the beach-town marketing suggests. Cherngtalay, Bang Tao and Surin are full of cafés, but many treat vegetarian food as one token salad at the bottom of the menu — and a genuinely vegetarian Thai dish is harder than it looks, because fish sauce and dried shrimp are the salt of that cuisine. Our menu leans European at breakfast and lunch, and every item carries a tag, so you can see what is in a dish before you ask.
What is the vegetarian breakfast?
Breakfast runs all day — 10:00 until we close at 19:00 — so a late riser from a Bang Tao villa and someone coming off Surin Beach at five get the same menu. The lightest option is oatmeal with berries — oats with strawberries, banana, honey and toasted nuts. Pancakes come classic, with berries and maple syrup, or with warm chocolate sauce. Avocado toast is sourdough baked that morning with smashed avocado, a poached egg, lime and chilli flakes. Shakshuka — eggs poached in spiced tomato and pepper sauce, with feta and buttered toast — is the most substantial vegetarian plate we make. The plain three-egg omelette is the most flexible, for the reason two sections down.
Salads and a hot vegetarian main
Vegetables come from Thalang farmers up the road, and dressing goes on the side if you ask. The Greek salad is the one to order on a hot day: tomato, cucumber, pepper, red onion, olives, feta, oregano, olive oil. The burrata salad is the splurge: burrata, cherry tomatoes, basil pesto, rocket, balsamic — the pesto contains nuts. Want something hot and handheld instead of leaves? The spinach omelette wrap is a green spinach omelette rolled with herbs and vegetables in a warm tortilla, with a garden salad and honey-mustard dressing.

How do you customise an order?
A short conversation at the counter beats reading a menu. The omelette takes vegetables +20 ฿, mushrooms +25 ฿ and cheese +25 ฿ in any combination — chicken +30 ฿ is the one add-on that stops it being vegetarian. Dressing on the side on any salad. Sweetness adjusted on request: less sweet, or no syrup at all, because Thai cafés default sweet and we do not mind going the other way. Spice level mild, medium or hot, free. Extra fried egg +20 ฿ if a plate needs more protein.
Oat milk, juices and what is marked vegan
Oat milk is +35 ฿ on any milk drink. That covers the whole coffee-with-milk section — hot latte 99 ฿, iced latte 119 ฿, cappuccino 89–109 ฿, flat white 99 ฿ — and the matcha bar, where a matcha latte is 99 ฿ and the premium grade 159 ฿. An oat milk latte in Cherngtalay, then, is 134 ฿ hot. Other extras: extra shot +25 ฿, syrup +15 ฿, whipped cream +15 ฿.
Drinks our menu marks vegan, with nothing to substitute: black coffee 69–99 ฿, a refillable Twinings pot 99 ฿, cold-brewed iced tea 89 ฿, clear matcha and clear genmaicha 99 ฿, orange and butterfly pea matcha 129 ฿, matcha lemon soda 119 ฿, the homemade sodas 99 ฿ and a non-alcoholic mojito 119 ฿. The fresh juices — 119 ฿, orange, apple, pineapple or carrot — are squeezed to order with no sugar added.
What is not vegetarian here?
Worth saying plainly, because a wrong guess ruins a meal. The Caesar salad, 229 ฿, has grilled chicken in it. Som tam, 149 ฿, and pad thai, 219 ฿, both contain shrimp. Tom yum and the fried rices come with chicken or shrimp, the club sandwich has chicken and beef bacon, and the English breakfast is a meat breakfast. We are not a dedicated vegetarian kitchen either — the same pans cook meat and fish — and we label nothing vegan or gluten-free on the food side, because these plates lean on egg, cheese, butter, honey and bread.
Halal is not the same as vegetarian
The two get conflated constantly. Halal describes how food is sourced and cooked: here, no pork anywhere and no alcohol at all. Vegetarian describes whether a dish contains meat or fish. A halal kitchen can and does serve chicken, and a halal dish is not automatically meat-free — which is why the vegetarian tag sits on individual dishes rather than on the menu as a whole. More on the first half in our guide to halal food on the west coast.
Allergies: tell the waiter
Dishes are tagged for egg, milk, nuts and spice; for anything else, say it out loud when you order — staff speak English and Thai. Two things people miss: the oatmeal and the burrata salad both contain nuts, and the bakery counter changes daily, so today's croissant is a question for the counter, not a web page.
Vegetarian here means a plate someone wanted to cook, not an apology at the bottom of the menu.

Questions & answers
Do you have a vegetarian breakfast near Bang Tao or Surin?
Yes, and breakfast is served all day until we close at 19:00. The vegetarian-tagged choices are oatmeal with berries 149 ฿, pancakes 149–169 ฿, avocado toast 219 ฿ and shakshuka 249 ฿; the plain three-egg omelette at 149 ฿ comes with a side salad and toast and takes vegetables +20 ฿, mushrooms +25 ฿ or cheese +25 ฿. We are on Srisoonthon Road in Cherngtalay, about 1 km from Surin Beach and 2 km from Bang Tao, Boat Avenue and Laguna Phuket.
Do you have oat milk, and does it cost extra?
Yes. Oat milk is +35 ฿ on any milk drink, so an oat latte is 99 ฿ hot or 119 ฿ iced plus 35 ฿, and an oat matcha latte is 99 ฿ plus 35 ฿. The other drink extras are an extra espresso shot +25 ฿, syrup +15 ฿ and whipped cream +15 ฿. Sweetness is adjusted on request — just say less sweet or no syrup when you order.
Are there vegan dishes and vegan drinks?
On the drinks side, plenty: the menu marks black coffee 69–99 ฿, hot and iced tea 79–99 ฿, clear matcha and clear genmaicha 99 ฿, orange matcha and butterfly pea matcha 129 ฿, matcha lemon soda 119 ฿, the homemade sodas 99 ฿ and the fresh juices 119 ฿ with no sugar added. On the food side we do not label any dish vegan — the vegetarian dishes contain egg, cheese, feta, butter or honey. Ask the staff and they will tell you exactly what is in a plate.
Is the vegetarian food here halal? Is halal the same as vegetarian?
The whole kitchen is halal: no pork and no alcohol anywhere, so yes, the vegetarian dishes are halal too. But the two words answer different questions. Halal says how the food is sourced and cooked; vegetarian says whether it contains meat or fish. A halal kitchen can serve a chicken salad and a halal dish is not automatically meat-free, which is why we put a vegetarian tag on individual dishes rather than on the menu as a whole.
